1 Week Pregnant, but not pregnant. Hmm?

1 Week Pregnant, but not pregnant. Hmm?

Most doctors and midwives count you as 1 week pregnant based on the first day of your last period. That means you are pregnant before you’re actually pregnant. It’s actually a pretty common misconception that the 40 (or so) week countdown to having a baby begins at conception. You are 1 week pregnant beginning at the very start of the menstrual cycle, during your period when you shed the uterine lining, you are preparing the perfect environment for a fertilized egg. Ovulation will happen roughly 14 days later, during which conception can occur. At this point, your little guy or gal is still just a quiet wish, a sweet dream, and a subject your mother-in-law brings up every time she’s over for dinner – but once you know for certain that you are pregnant, you are no longer just 1 week pregnant, but much further along. You have a few weeks as a mama-to-be under your belt – a belt that’s about to get reeeaaalll snug.

Kick off your healthy routine while enjoying pregnancy!

If you’re trying to become pregnant, now’s the time to start a healthy routine. Avoid alcohol, drink plenty of water, and be sure to include as many fresh fruits, veggies and grains as you can into your diet. Try and stay on the outer limits of the grocery store where you’ll find so-called pregnancy “superfoods” like beans, eggs, berries, yogurt, salmon, almonds, broccoli, and quinoa. All of these are packed with important nutrients to keep you and your growing baby healthy and strong, and may keep some unpleasant pregnancy symptoms (like heartburn and excessive bloating) down to a minimum; which you are not experiencing yet while in your first week of pregnancy. But, by all means, do not deprive yourself a quick cruise down the cookie aisle. Studies would most likely prove that pregnant mothers are happier when given frequent portions of cookies. Happy mom, happy pregnancy, happy baby. Toss some in the cart!

Been thinking about signing up for yoga classes? Do it! The benefits of yoga are endless while you’re pregnant. The stretches and poses will help you feel in control of your body as your pregnancy progresses and pregnancy symptoms pop-up, and the breathing techniques you’ll learn will be a lifesaver during labor. Some yoga studios even offer prenatal yoga classes tailored to your body’s needs. So while you are just 1 week pregnant, take advantage of learning to be flexible. It’s also not a bad idea to start taking prenatal vitamins now. Folic acid, iron, and calcium are important for your health during pregnancy and for the development of your baby, even now when you may just started your pregnancy. Prenatal vitamins are sold at most drug stores, and your doctor may prescribe them to you as well. Excessive thirst can be one of the major pregnancy symptoms, and one that may be hard to keep up with. Increased levels of hormones, besides making you cry during car insurances commercials, can make you constantly feel thirsty. A giant, reusable water bottle is about to become your best friend.

Before the two become three…

This may be a great opportunity for you and your partner to take some time to work on your relationship. You don’t have to be in crisis to read some helpful books or attend couples therapy. Pregnancy, especially difficult ones filled with pregnancy symptoms that never let up, can be stressful on a relationship. Having a baby and becoming parents will introduce all kinds of new dynamics into your life together. Your daily routine at home, who-does-what chores around the house, and a whole host of other things you swore would never change, are about to. Working on the weak spots of your relationship and celebrating the strengths during the weeks and months of pregnancy is a great way to prepare for the biggest challenge you’re about to enter together. Enjoy this time alone. Go on long walks, go away for the weekend, go on a date! Dinner out as a twosome is a whole lot easier as a threesome – especially when you don’t have to call ahead to check if the restaurant has high-chairs.

Some couples are very open about sharing that they’re “trying”. Others prefer to keep things very private. No matter what you and your partner decide, make sure you are on the same page. If he thinks your baby making plans are top-secret, he may feel pretty betrayed when your best friend starts calling him “papa”, or even worse, “tiger”. Vice-versa goes when you run into your husband’s golf buddy at the coffee shop and he quips, “That’d better be a decaf, missy!”. Not everyone talks about it, but early miscarriages are not uncommon. About 10 to 20 percent of pregnancies end in miscarriage, and about 80 percent of those occur before 12 weeks. Sometimes, a good rule of thumb is to share your exciting news with the people in your life whom you wouldn’t mind sharing disappointing or sad news with, too.

Let’s do this!

It all starts when you are 1 week pregnant. One week closer to experiencing some major magic. There are all sorts of things to read, think about, talk about, buy, and make when you’re getting ready – but nothing will really prepare you for the incredible moment you see what’s been growing inside of you for 9 months. Long past your first week of pregnancy when you take one look at that sweet, wrinkly little face staring up at you and all the giant prenatal vitamins you had to swallow, all the broccoli, and all the shaky tree poses in yoga class will be more than worth it.
