This baby is getting ready to dance up a storm!
Welcome to the double digits! You are now 10 weeks pregnant with only two weeks left of your first trimester. At this point of your pregnancy, your baby is about the size of a chestnut! Your little guy or gal is getting prepared for some in utero aerobics as it can now bend its limbs and kick its little feet. Your baby is even growing some body hair! Now that you are 10 weeks pregnant and your baby has completed just about all of its development, it is now an bonafide fetus! Good job baby! And good job mama!
What a sweet, sweet sound…
Your 10 week prenatal visit may include one of the most exciting moments of your pregnancy, and maybe even your life! The baby’s heartbeat should be easy to detect and loud and strong! Be sure that your partner joins you for this appointment. You may want to take a video, or you may just want to be in the moment. Either way you’re in for an amazing moment.
Who says you can’t be a pregnant fashionista?
Being 10 weeks pregnant marks the point where your uterus has grown to about the size of a small head of lettuce. You may be noticing your body starting to look pregnant. Chances are you’ve probably thrown in the towel with your regular pants and have succumb to the reality of maternity wear. That may sound grim, but take heart, maternity fashion has come a long way since the days of moo-moos with giant bows on the front. You can be as fashion forward as you feel like during your pregnancy! If you’re feeling down about growing out of your regular wardrobe and worrying that you’ll never be able to fit in any of it again, take this opportunity to do some retail therapy. It’s a good idea to include two pairs of jeans, a few dresses, three or four pairs of work pants, five blouses, and maybe one special dressy dress for a fancy night out or a wedding. One of the common pregnancy symptoms is swollen feet (while 10 weeks pregnant your feet are most likely not swollen yet), so be conservative with your shoe purchases. It would be a crying shame if you shelled out major moolah for some pricey must-have sandals, just to find them falling off after your baby has arrived. Postpartum you will be kicking the 10 week pregnant you in the (maternity) pants for that decision!
Big feelings: pregnancy symptoms or maybe a bit more…
So unfortunately, your pregnancy symptoms may still be going strong at 10 weeks pregnant. You may still be struggling to stay awake during meetings at work or even at the dinner table. You may also be wondering when certain smells will stop making you dry heave! Maybe even more concerning, your pregnancy symptoms may be mostly in the emotions department. Mood changes and intense emotions are very common pregnancy symptoms and extremely normal. But, ask yourself – are my feelings simply pregnancy symptoms, or is this pregnancy bringing some big feelings to the surface. You know yourself best. Talk to your doctor or midwife and be honest about what you are feeling. They may count your emotional difficulties as pregnancy symptoms that will likely pass, and they may recommend you talk to a therapist. No matter what, give yourself a break. Take time out of every day to relax and breathe. Turn your phone off and go for a walk. A relaxing soak in the tub every night could do wonders. Anxiety and depression are pregnancy symptoms that not everyone likes to talk about. Ask for help, get support from your partner, and know that you will come out on the other side, and maybe help another pregnant woman down the road.
The light at the end of the first trimester tunnel…
By the 10th week, your pregnancy symptoms may have you working overtime in the coping department, but be encouraged that this too shall pass. Many women find that the second trimester of their pregnancy found them feeling like finally emerging from a cave full of exhaustion and nausea and other unpleasant pregnancy symptoms. Hang in there! There is indeed light at the end of the first trimester tunnel.
If you and your partner are waiting until you are in your second trimester to announce your pregnancy, now’s the time to decide how you’d like to do it. Some women find it awkward to break the news to people, especially to people they aren’t necessary close to – like co-workers. Do what feels right to you. Maybe announcing your news to groups of people at once is the way to go. Maybe a short-but-sweet work email would be easy and get the job done before behind your back whispers around the water cooler start. Could she be pregnant? Maybe she’s just gained a lot of weight? Ugh. Holiday gatherings are perfect for telling friends and family. Everyone is already in a celebratory mood, and your exciting baby news will be it that much more fun. It will be a memory that you and everyone else will never forget. And what a great story to tell when your baby grows up!
You’re doing great!
